Section 1
The scientific name of the cougar is called a puma concolor. This animal can not roar, but purrs like a house cat. Cougars are large cats with long tails and big boned. This animal can jump from 30 to 50 feet from where it stands. They usually weigh more then 150 pounds.
Section 2
Cougars are solitary animals, which means a animal that lives and roam by it self. Mountain lions hunt large mammals such as deer and elk, but sometimes cougars eat small animals. Cougars like to attack there prey from behind. Also they kill alone by biting the prey's neck. They are carnivores which means a animal that eats other animals by killing them, cougars are active in the morning and at night.
Section 3
Theres only two parts of the world that have cougars which are North and Central America. The mountain lion's natrual habitat is forest, lowland, tropical forest, grassland, and swamps.
Section 4
Historically moutain lions were the most extensive disturbution of large cats in the United States.
The current population of cougars are 30 to 50 mountain lions in the wild today. Theres only 30,000 cougars in the U.S. alone.
Section 5
The cause of population decline is collisions with vechicles. Also people knocking down trees in the forest and building houses and buildings. One reason to protect this animal is that the government is trying to stop legal hunting in the eastern states. State wild life agencies are mandated to conserve cougars.
