ENDANGERED SPECIES RESEARCH PROJECT:
The Black Rhinoceros
The black rhinoceros is an endangered species and the scientific name of the animal is diceros brocrnis.
Appearance: How does it look? They look like a horse that has a horn that is very sharp. The size of the animal is 2000 to 4000 lbs.
The habits and behavior of the animal: The black rhinoceros is solitary animal because they live by themselves. They can be found in East Africa, in the bushy savanna around the rivers. They also live in the grasslands in sub-Saharan Africa Kenya and South Africa (www.earthsendangered.com).
The current and historical population data: Before it was endangered there were “850,000 but relentless hunting of the species killed many and 100,000 remained between 1960 and 1995.’’ The current population of the species living in the wild is 4,848, its critically endangered (www.gogrolier.com).
Conservation effort-what is currently being done to help?
‘’The population declined because European hunters, hunted for food ,clearances of land for settlement and agriculture and amusement.” “Poaching people believe the rhinos’ horns had magic and powers.” There are four subspecies of black rhino’s.
What is being done to protect the animals today is “all international commercial trade in black rhinos and their products have been prohibited." We are not keeping them in zoos or preserves, we let them go in the wild once they are old enough to live on their own (www.gogrolier.com).
