ENDANGERED SPECIES RESEARCH PROJECT 5/15/13 FACTS ABOUT COUGARS

Section 1: Introduction and Description of the Cougar
            The cougar’s scientific name is puma (www.eartsendangered.com). They have a peanut butter color they look just like a house cat but larger. They are eight feet long and can weigh up to 150 lbs. (www.earthsendangered.com).
Section 2: Habits and behavior
Cougars usually travel in packs but will hunt solo. It is a predator and it eats deer and elk, beavers, porcupines or even mice. (www.scsd.us). Cougars are carnivores they eat meet like small animals and some animals bigger than them. A cougars sleeping habit is at night. The cougar is most active at twilight. (www.scsd.us).
Section 3: Natural Habitat
 The cougars live in North and Central America.  Cougars' natural habitat is in the woodlands of Canada. (www.earthsendangered.com)  The cougar species has made a recovery with over 30,000 in the US alone. There used to be 100 until recovery. There are 30,000 species living In the wild and less living in captivity.


Section 4 & 5: Population Data & Conservation Effort
Pumas were known to kill cattle on farms and ranches and ranchers used to hunt and trap the large cats. “Cougars are well known to be at risk, most people do not know the reason behind this, but it is actually the human race who is diminishing the life of this fascinating creature” (www.gogrolier.com).   Many things have been debated on how best to save the cougars, but after establishing the main reasons the cougars are becoming endangered (www.ogrolier.com).
