The Giant panda is an endangered species. The giant
pandas scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca. The panda head and body is
mainly white. The ears, eyes, nose, shoulders, arms and legs are black. Panda’s
eyes are very small and they have very poor eye sight. A panda’s weight is 165
to 330 lb.
The giant panda is usually solitary. A panda is a
predator. The panda is an omnivore. It eats meat and vegetables, such as fruit,
berries, grass, fungi and small mammals like birds and fish. The giant panda
also sleeps at night.
The giant panda can be found in Central and Western
China. Pandas are very good climbers. They live in the forest. The forest rains
a lot.
The original historical population before giant panda
were endangered was that is was always endangered. In the early 21st
century there were 175 pandas. The current population right now is 1000 to 2000
remain in the wild.
The causes of population decline are because of
disruption of habitat and poaching. The world wildlife fund and Chinese
ministry or forests have developed a conservation management. The plan
outlining 14 new panda reserves and five corridors connecting patches of panda
habitat.
