Amir Ford- african wild dogs

Endangered species research project
Amir Ford

African wild dogs

You may have heard of the African wild dog. These are
Not your regular dogs. They are very mean but good looking dogs
They have a dark or light brown fur coat and have a lot of spots (www.earthsendangered.com).  They are endangered due to isolation. The African people are trying to take over the land they are on now (www.wcs.org). The wildlife conservation society is trying to start capturing the wild dogs because they want to make sure they are in a good place and not going to be killed by the South African tribes.
When these dogs hunt for food they attack the prey from the back side so they can’t run away. They travel in packs of 6 or they are with a larger pack but they are all family.  The African wild dogs are also
called carnivores. They live in South Africa in the woodlands (www.natgeo.com).  Just a place with a lot of grass and land.

Tigers are
enemies of the African lions!!!

THE CURRENT POPULATION OF THE SPECIES ARE CURRENTLY LIVING IN THE WILD IS 10 ANIMALS LIVING IN THE WILD.

SOME CAUSES OF POPULATION DECLINE THAT THREATENED THE SPECIESIS THAT THE EUROPEAN POPULATION SUGGESTED CAUSE OF DECLINE INCLUDES POISONING BY ACCUMULATION OF LEAD.
COLLISIONS WITH WIND TURBINES, REDUCED FOOD AVAILABILITY AND HABITAT CHANGE ARE CURRENTLY IMPORTANT UPON EUROPEAN POPULATION.  IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT THIS ANIMAL TODAY BY SAVING THEM FROM BEING KILLED BY PROACHERS AND PEOPLE FROM DESTROYING THEIR HOMES.

The scientific name of the African wild dog is lycaon pictas.  The colors are black and yellow with a black muzzle. They roam in packs of 30 to 40 dogs in one pack. Also they have one female dog and one male dog as the leader. When they hunt they bite the prey in the butt so they don’t get hit with the horns an die. This is what they eat: gazelles, antelope an even zebras.

The african wild dog sleeps at night and they hunt in the morning, late afternoon and evening. They live in SUBSAHARAN AFRICA. In Africa it is very hot and there are grassy plains in Africa.

in the late 1970’s there only 7,000 in the world. Today there are only about 3,500 in the world.
Some cause of population decline of Their habit is destruction for farmland an outbreak of disease as a verminos that disease made the wild dogs get shot on sight have contributed to decline. IT’S about 5% of conservationists like grey Rasmussen started the painted dog conservation site. People in africA put signs to tell driver to watch out for Africa wild dogs. They put collars so they don’t get caught in the traps.

Section 1
The scientific name of the cougar is called a puma concolor.  This animal can not roar, but purrs like a house cat.  Cougars are large cats with long tails and big boned.  This animal can  jump from 30 to 50 feet from where it stands.  They usually weigh  more then 150 pounds.

Section 2
Cougars  are solitary animals, which means a animal that lives and roam by it self.  Mountain lions hunt large mammals such as deer and elk, but sometimes cougars eat small animals.  Cougars like to attack there prey from behind.  Also they kill alone by biting the prey's neck.  They are carnivores which means a animal that eats other animals by killing them, cougars are active in the morning and at night.

Section 3

Theres only two parts of the world that have cougars which are North and Central America.  The mountain lion's natrual habitat is forest, lowland, tropical forest, grassland, and swamps.

Section 4
Historically moutain lions were the most extensive disturbution of large cats in the United States.
The current population of cougars are 30 to 50 mountain lions in the wild today.  Theres only 30,000 cougars in the U.S. alone.

Section 5

The cause of population decline is collisions with vechicles.  Also people knocking down trees in the forest and building houses and buildings.  One reason to protect this animal is that the government is trying to stop legal hunting in the eastern states.  State wild life agencies are mandated to conserve cougars.

Section 4 & 5: Population Data & Conservation Effort
Pumas were known to kill cattle on farms and ranches and ranchers used to hunt and trap the large cats. “Cougars are well known to be at risk, most people do not know the reason behind this, but it is actually the human race who is diminishing the life of this fascinating creature” (www.gogrolier.com).   Many things have been debated on how best to save the cougars, but after establishing the main reasons the cougars are becoming endangered (www.ogrolier.com).
