Nathalie Lopez- Little Spotted Cats

Little spotted cats are an endangered species. The scientific name for Little spotted cats are Leopardus tigrinus. The way that a little spotted cat looks like is that their fur are pretty much tan (some white) with black spots and black rings on the end of their tails; they somewhat look like a cheetah. Adults weigh only 4 to 8 ib and can only reach up to 25.5 inches long.
Little spotted cats were solitary animals (they are usually are found alone). This endangered species were known as predators. Little spotted cats are carnivores, hey usually eat small rodents, birds, insects, and reptiles; some little spotted cats even eat little monkeys in Brazil. Little spotted cats are usually asleep all night and active day.
This endangered species can be found in South America; mostly seen in scrubs in northeastern Brazil and forests in Venezuela. Little spotted cats’ natural habitats are humid evergreen and mountain cloud forests. They like to live in sunny/ rainy places so that it can be easier for them to survive. What happens if they can’t find food where they live?
This endangered species’ original habitat is the forest. Little spotted cats were mostly in Brazil. How many little spotted cat s were there before? Why don’t they just keep the rest in captivity?
A reason why little spotted cats are starting to go endangered is because people started destroying the forest so now they don’t have a place to live or they don’t know how their going to get their food. Another reason why they’re going endangered is because people are hunting them down for their fur. Now there’s a law that doesn’t allow people to hunt little spotted cats in some countries.

Asiatic Lion

The Asiatic Lion is and endangered species the scientific name for the lion is Pathera Leo Persica. They have folded skin on their stomachs, the males’ main varies in color, and females are smaller than males. Males are about 550 lbs. females are about 400 lbs. and they are about 8ft long.

The lions usually stay in packs or groups. They are carnivores; they eat wildebeest, zebra, giraffes, gazelles, young elephants and hippos. They are nocturnal (they sleep during the daytime).

They are found in northern Namibia, Senegal east to Somalia, east Africa, Angola, Kalahari and east to Mozambique. They live on grassy plains, savannas and open woodlands.

The population of lions before endangerment was 411. They ranged from northern India in the east thought modern Iran, south of Arabian Peninsula.

Some of the things that have killed this species is the clearing of jungle forests, hunting, and because people hunt their prey. A national park and ion sanctuary has been successful in taking care of the last remaining wild population.

Also North as Texas in the U.S. The ocelots live in densely covered habitats and are able to thrive in a variety of different types, ranging from dense thorn srub to mountainous regions and tropical forest. They are generally nocturnal and are solitary.

Ocelots were placed on the endangered list on March 30,1992. Today 120 ocelots inhabit Texas. Also several ocelots are surrounding zoos.

Causes of the ocelots population to decline was, Deforestation, Habitat destruction, and being killed for fur.Today people are protecting the ocelots. It is now a law that ocelot hunting is banned.

The Giant Panda

The giant panda can be found in Central and Western China. Pandas are very good climbers. They live in the forest. The forest rains a lot.

The original historical population before giant panda were endangered was that is was always endangered. In the early 21st century there were 175 pandas. The current population right now is 1000 to 2000 remain in the wild.

The causes of population decline are because of disruption of habitat and poaching. The world wildlife fund and Chinese ministry or forests have developed a conservation management. The plan outlining 14 new panda reserves and five corridors connecting patches of panda habitat.

The range didn’t move only the population did.                                                                                                            Most of the sand cats died of shortage of food and water. They died of disease to. At one point they were concerned of low population. They are concerned on their size because other animals can eat them. They are being protected by an international agreement that restricts the trade in animals.

Sheri Voudren, Ethiopian Wolf

Sheri Voudren                                                                                 05-06-13
                                  Endangered Species Research Project
The Ethiopian Wolf is an endangered species. The scientific name for Ethiopian Wolfs is Canis Simensis. The appearance on this wolf is that there coat is reddish gold and there under parts are white. Females are normally a paler color. They have long legs small teeth but a long muzzle also with a bushy tails with a black tip.

Ethiopian Wolfs are pack animals they have a pack of at least 6and they are a predator to smaller animals. Ethiopian Wolfs are carnivores. They eat rodents, giant mole rats, and other species of grass rats, young antelopes, and lambs. These kind of wolfs are awake during the day and they all rest in a pack at night out in the open.

Ethiopia Africa is where you can find the Ethiopian Wolfs and also in Afro-Alpine of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The Ethiopian Wolfs natural habitat is just land in the middle of nowhere. They are around lots of land and open moorlands where vegetation is less than 0.25 meter’s high. They sleep in the middle of the land in the grass in packs of at least 6.

The Ethiopian Wolfs population keeps dropping because of rabies. Since 2003 at least 38 have died from rabies in the Bale Mountains. Another 20 – 25 are missing and presumed dead there are 300 endangered wolfs. There’s less than 450 Ethiopian Wolfs left on earth. The 450 wolfs that are left are living in 7 scattered high altitude pockets of the Bale Mountains.

The population decline is because of the outbreak in rabies, agricultural practices, hybridization, and high altitude grazing. The biggest reason the population decline is because of the rabies its spreading threw there packs and killing more and more. They are trying to protect them by trying to come out with vaccines for rabies that would be able to be dropped in the field by an aircraft into the wild populations so they could bring the population of wolfs back up. The population would hopefully increase after the medicine.

Mr. Kasouf-Asiatic Black Bear

Asiatic Black Bear

Scientific Name:
Ursus thibetanus
Other Names and/or Listed subspecies:
Tibetan Black Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Moon Bear, Selenarctos thibetanus gedrosianus, Baluchistan Bear
The Baluchistan bear is a subspecies of the Asiatic black bear. It is also called "moon bear" because of a distinctive white crescent marking appearing on the chest. It is similar in appearance to its better-known American relative (the American black bear). The head tapers to a rather pointed snout, and it has rounded ears which are large and prominent. Adults reach between six and eight feet in head and body length on average, and weigh between 110 to 330 lbs. The tail is 2.5 to 4 inches long. Males are larger than females. Baluchistan bears have very sharp claws and are excellent climbers and swimmers.

This species prefers forest habitat which includes temperate and tropical woodlands in hilly or mountainous areas with heavy brush cover. It spends much of the day sleeping and is mainly active at night. Diet consists of fruits, nuts, buds and insects. Asiatic black bears are more carnivorous than their American counterparts since they are known to eat leftover prey killed by tigers, which helps to build up fat before winter. They have also been known to consume domestic livestock. Except mothers and cubs, they are usually solitary. Mating may occur around October, and females give birth to two cubs after a gestation period of seven to eight months. The young are nursed for three to four months and remain with the mother for two years.

The Baluchistan bear is only found in Iran and Pakistan and is threatened by habitat destruction and hunting for its skin, paws and gall bladder (which is used in Oriental medicine). They are considered a nuisance to humans since they eat crops and domestic livestock, and unfortunately, human attacks are also common. All Asiatic black bears are protected by law, but law enforcement is extremely limited in much of its range.

The black bear lives two different lives, according to the season. In the spring, summer, and fall, it only thinks about eating. It can be seen on the shore of a stream or lake fishing for salmon. Black bears are fond of tree resin. They strip the bark of conifers. And they destroy some trees in the process. These foods are not the most important part of their diet, however. Their usual diet is 25 percent rodents and 75 percent plants.
When winter approaches, the bear goes back to its den and falls asleep. During the two to four months of cold weather, the bear's body temperature and breathing slow down. It lives in slow motion! But this is not true hibernation. When the weather gets warmer, it wakes up for short periods. During these breaks it eats a little and gets back its strength. A solitary animal, the black bear lives in an area of 1 to 36 square miles. Mating season is from May to July. In January or February the female brings forth one to three nearly naked bear cubs. Each one weighs no more than 10 ounces. They do not leave their mother to hibernate in their own area until the second winter.
Its awkward way of walking makes us forget that the black bear is an agile animal. It climbs, runs, and swims well. It rarely attacks people unless it is wounded. But a mother bear with her cubs will attack if she senses danger.
